If you are here today with me you’ll most likely have heard of Rumi, however for those of you who haven’t, here’s a brief rundown of the most famous of all Sufi Masters.

Rumi was born in Balkh Afghanistan in 1207 and passed away in 1273 at the age of 67. Living in Turkey for the last 50 years of his life. Despite him living so long ago, he is the best known of all Sufi’s. In America alone, he is by far the most popular and is also the best-selling of all poets worldwide. Rumi’s love poems have been best described as ‘Speaking of Joy and Love’

A Sufi is described as a lover and searcher of truth. Through their love and devotion, they seek to become one with their beloved. The appeal of Sufi poetry is Universal. The great Sufi poets including Rumi, Hafiz and Khayyam are loved by both Sufis and non-Sufis alike.

The poems below are sometimes not easy to comprehend during their first reading. So if I may, I’d like to suggest that you read them through once at your leisure. I then suggest you read them through again, this time pondering each word as they come together to soothe the soul and leave you touched by their power of expression. Only then, will you begin to understand his wisdom and seeking of the true meanings of life.

In your light I learn how to love, in your beauty how to make poems, you dance inside my chest where no one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art.

However much we describe love when we fall in love we are ashamed of our words.

Let the beauty of love, be what you do.A beautiful pink rose begins to bloom

Through love thorns become roses, through love vinegar becomes wine.

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all barriers within yourself, that you have built against it.

If I love myself I love you, If I love you I love myself.

Love and tenderness are qualities of humanity, passion and lust are qualities of animality.

Only from the heart can you touch the sky.

Woman is a ray of God, not a mere mistress, the creators self, as it were, not a mere creature.

Love is the infinite and will remain until eternity, the seeker of love escapes the chains of birth and death.

I don’t want learning or dignity, or respectability, I want this music and this dawn, and the warmth of your cheek against mine.

Raise your words and not your voice, is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.

I will be waiting here for your silence to break, for your soul to shake, for your love to wake.

The minute I heard my first love story I started looking for you. Not knowing how blind that was.

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere, they’re in each other all along.

At a distance, you only see my light, come closer and know that I am you.

Open your hands, if you want to be held.

I once had a thousand desires, but in my one desire to know you all else melted away.

A thousand half-loves must be forsaken to take one whole heart home.

Love is the bridge between you and everything.

Explanation by the tongue makes most things clear, but love unexplained is clearer.

Reason is powerless in the expression of love.

I am yours, don’t give myself back to me.

Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation.

I want to see you, know your voice, recognize you when you first come round the corner, sense your scent when I come to a room you’ve just left, know the lift of your heel, the glide of your foot, to become familiar with the way your purse your lips, and let them part just the slightest bit, when I lean into your space and kiss you, I want to know the joy of how you whisper more.

These pains you feel are messengers, listen to them.

Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love.

When you do things from your soul, you feel a river of joy within you.

When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety, if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain.A pretty lady takes the time to be in wonder of the magical scent of a rose

What you seek is seeking you.

With life as short as a half taken breath, don’t plant anything but love.

Look for the answer inside your question.

Set your life on fire, seek those who fan your flames.

Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

As you start to walk on, the way appears.

Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open.

I searched for God and found only myself, I searched for myself and found only God.

But listen to me for one moment, quit being sad, hear blessings dropping their blossoms around you.

Gratitude is the wine for the soul, go on get drunk.

If you are irritated by every rub how will you be polished?

The quieter you become, the better you are able to hear.

This is a subtle truth, whatever you love, you are.

Why are you knocking at every other door? Go, knock at the door of your own heart.2 boys pay and swim in a creekand slpash water at a passing bird

Lovely days don’t come to you, you must walk to them.

You have seen my descent, now watch my rising.

The wound is the place where the light enters you.

Close your eyes, fall in love, and stay there.

Whatever hurts you, blesses you, the darkness is your candle.

Your body is away from me, but there is a window open, from my heart to yours.

The very centre of your heart is where life begins, the most beautiful place on earth.

You are not a drop in the ocean you are the entire ocean in a drop.

Know that one day your pain will be your cure.

It’s your road and yours alone, others can walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.

So there you go. Sufi wisdom. It’s truly been my privilege to research, write and share these words with you, and I am so grateful to Rumi for sharing with the world his age-old wisdom.

My wish is that you really absorbed what each of his writings means and that you are just that touch more loving and wiser than prior to reading.

Love and Wisdom to you Always

  1. Hi Paul,
Thank you so much for this very loving post. I have recently become aware of the name Rumi and before I could research myself I found your article. These poems and words of love and wisdom deeply resonated with me and I now feel very privileged to have them with me. I especially liked, ‘Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it’.
    In appreciation and love,

    1. Hello Nathan,

Brings me a great amount of joy to hear how much you enjoyed my post. Rumi’s works are not for everyone, but to have someone appreciate his words as much as you inspires me to know that we can all make a difference to peoples lives. My wish is that they made your heart and soul just that little bit more tender, and that in turn you may share that tenderness with not only those that are closest to you, but to all who come in contact with you on your journey.

‘A stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet’

      With gratitude and love

  2. Such lovely writing. I’ve been seeing for a while quotes from his poems on social media. Had no idea he lived so long ago, honestly thought it was a pseudonym. I’m amazed that so long ago they were writing these kinds of things.
How many books did he write and how are they still around, not lost in time?

    1. Hello Aless

Thanks for replying, and yes Rumi’s popularity has grown immensely. I think social media has brought about an awareness of his beautiful writings.I have to admit I had to look up the meaning of ‘pseudonym’,haha and understand why you thought this way. From my research I have learnt that he has written close to 40 books, that is how many are available to purchase from Amazon, which is quite amazing.Obviously they have been reprinted and is the reason why he is the most popular of all poets in the world today.Just another example that you can only reach your true heights of greatness after you have passed away.

      All the very best Aless

  3. Hi Paul. I have seen a few quotations with ‘Rumi’ written beside them and always wondered who is Rumi. Thank you for these powerful statements that are so life changing. I am also glad to read about who he was….and is. My favorite is “What you seek is seeking you”. Thanks for sharing this collection

    1. Hey JJ

Thanks for your comment mate and it wasn’t that long ago I didn’t know who Rumi was either. But he certainly has a beautiful way with words and yes they can be life changing if you give them enough time to truly sink in. I really love that quote too, ‘What you are seeking is seeking you’ , great one to remember when lacking a little patience.

Once again great to hear from you my friend and as always the very best to you. Drop in again some time your most welcome.
