A beautiful yellow butterfly approaches a yellow flower in full bloom

Hello and Welcome

This is an article I have really enjoyed putting together. The reason being these enlightenment quotes have introduced me to many wonderful and wise words of wisdom, from some of the greatest teachers that have walked the earth, and I feel a peace through awareness of my own faults, that I have never known before.

Make no mistake this post has nothing to do with religion, but it is truly evidence of the fact that all these great men and women speak the same language regardless of their faith.

Simple truths abound in these words, reinforcing to us that if we choose to put into practice the ideas presented here, they can, and will, bring us, and those whose path we cross, peace, happiness, and contentment.

The enlightened ones listed below are in no specific order of importance, for that would be of no significance to them. They all have a brilliant message to share, and that message is as simple as it is profound-

If You Can Acquire Love And Peace Within. You May Then Offer Kindness And Compassion Without!

May you truly enjoy reading these great words of wisdom as much as I have enjoyed researching and writing them.

A statue of Buddha while the sunsetting sun glows through a Bodhi tree, beautiful pink clouds and the ocean complete the scene

Three things cannot be long hidden, the sun, the moon, and the truth.

No one saves us but ourselves, no one can and no one may, we ourselves must walk the path.

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.

We are shaped by our thoughts, we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace.

Peace comes from within, do not seek it without.

You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else, you are the one who gets burned.

There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth, not going all the way, and not starting.

I never see what has been done I only see what remains to be done.

Better than worshipping gods is obedience to the laws of righteousness.

We are what we think, all that we are, arises from our thoughts, with our thoughts we make the world.

The weak can never forgive, forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

First, they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, and then you win.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.

You must not lose faith in humanity, humanity is an ocean. If a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.

An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

The good man is the friend of all living things.

Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from an indomitable will.

Nobody can hurt me without my permission.

A man is but the product of his thoughts, what he thinks he becomes.

Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is a full victory.

There is sufficiency in the world for mans need, but not for man’s greed.

The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

The real ornament of woman is her character, her purity.

We may stumble and fall but shall rise again. It should be enough that we do not run away from the battle.

An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.

If patience is worth anything, it must endure till the end of time, and a living faith will last midst even the blackest storm.

A small body of determined spirits, fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission, can alter the course of history.

Man becomes great, exactly in the degree in which he works for the welfare of his fellow man.

Glory lies in the attempt to reach one’s goal, and not in reaching it.

There is nothing that wastes the body like worry, and one who has faith in God should be ashamed to worry about anything whatsoever.

Faith is not something to grasp it is a state to grow into.

I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.

To believe in something, and not live it, is dishonest.

I look only to the good qualities of men, not being faultless myself, I won’t presume to probe into the faults of others.

Mother Teresa

Picture of Mother Teresa with quote- Peace Begins With A Smile

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.

Spread love everywhere you go, let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.

Peace begins with a smile.

Let us always meet each other with a smile, because a smile is the beginning of love.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness.

God is the friend of silence, see how natures trees, flowers and grass grow in silence. See the stars, the moon, and the sun, how they move in silence. We need silence to be able to touch souls.

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.

I have found the paradox, if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt only more, love.

Love is a fruit and in season at all times, and in reach of every hand.

If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.

Intense love does not measure, it just gives.

One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody.

Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents, parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world.

Every time you smile at someone it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.

If we want a love message to be heard it has got to be sent out, to keep a lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

Love begins by taking care of the closest ones, the ones at home.

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.

I know God won’t give me anything I can’t handle, I just wish he wouldn’t trust me so much.

Live simply so that others may simply live.

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do, but how much love we put into that action.

If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

Even the rich are hungry for love, for being cared, for being wanted.

Gold statue of Mohammed praying

Be kind, for when kindness becomes a part of something it beautifies it.

You will not enter paradise until you have faith, and you will not complete your faith until you love one another.

Conduct yourself in this world as if you are here to stay forever, and yet prepared for eternity as if you are to die tomorrow

The strongest among you is the one who controls his anger.

The prophet was asked ‘Which charity is best ‘, He replied ‘that which you give while you fear poverty’

Visit the sick, feed the hungry, and free the captive.

Richness is not having many possessions, but richness is being contented with oneself.

The greatest victory is to battle your own soul, fight the evil within yourself.

I love children, they are content with the least of things, gold and mud are the same in their eyes.

Speak a good word or remain silent.

No-one can be given a blessing, better and greater than patience.

There will come a time when holding on to your religion will be like holding onto hot coals.

The strong man is not the good wrestler, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he is angry.

You do not do evil to those who do evil to you, but you deal with them with forgiveness and kindness.

What has reached you was never meant to miss you, and what has missed you was never meant to reach you.

Picture of Jesus nailed to the cross on mountain overlooking the ocean at sunset

Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who are humbled will be exalted.

Therefore, I tell you whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.

Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other, and for everyone else.

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Go out in joy, and be led forth in peace, the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you, I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs.

Be completely humble and gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love.

A greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Let him who is without sin among you, cast the first stone.

Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself, sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Don’t be afraid, just believe.

Truly A Pleasure

  1. Thank you for sharing these spiritual quotes. Some that resonate most with me at the moment are, “You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger” from Buddha and “The strongest among you is the one who controls his anger.” from Mohammad. I think these emotions are a result of hanging too closely onto a person, material things, or a certain outcome. Simply accepting things as they are and having no expectations is a key to happiness.

    1. Hi Clara

Lovely to hear from you. I have to say both those quote you mentioned have been ringing in my ears since writing this post, especially Buddhas ‘You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger’.I also think you are spot with your summation of acceptance and surrender to what is going on, along with having no expectations are key for living a happy and fulfilled life.

Thanks for your little piece of enlightenment.

      With gratitude

  2. Hi Paul,

For some reason, your lists of great quotes reminded me of one which I thought I would dig out and share.

It is the famous one by Frederick Perls as far as I know, about me doing my thing and you doing your thing. And the fact that I am not here to live up to your expectations, nor the fact that you are not here to live up to mine.

However for some reason, the system is not allowing me to quote the exact phrases so hopefully you and other readers will know the quote I mean.

    Kind Regards,

    1. Hi David

Great to hear from you and i was most interested to find this quote and it was well worth the look

      Here we go!

” I do my thing and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am I, and if by chance we find each other that is beautiful.

If not, it can’t be helped.”

      -Frederick Salomon Perls

I’d never heard of this guy but look forward to enjoying some of his other great writings

Thanks for the contribution and I am sure all our readers will enjoy reading this quote

  3. Hi Paul,
I love your website and the inspirational quotes. Every time I fee tired and discourage on the thing I do, I would read some quotes, which bring my spirit back. Quote like: “If You Can Acquire Love And Peace Within. You May Then Offer Kindness And Compassion Without!” always reminds me to have self development, become self-strong in order to help others. I bookmarked your website and will come back regularly to get some inspiration from the beautiful quotes.

    1. Hello Hu
Thanks so much for your feedback, so glad to be able to first of all present these carefully selected quotes and to then have them lift your spirit. We all have times when we need a lift, no-one is exempt. The quote you mentioned is a favourite of mine as well, simple yet profound. If put into practice it will have a huge impact on not only you but those who are touched by your kindness and compassion. If we can all take a moment to put the simple ideas out there and follow through the whole world can and will be a much more loving and peaceful place.
      Truly a Pleasure Hu

  4. Thanks a lot for sharing these powerful words. Actually these words are treasure of wisdom. After reading this article I am feeling super motivated again. 5. I am a Christian, but I believe there is truth and beauty in all the world religions. Thank you for compiling this wonderful list of wisdom and teachings.

It is very interesting to me, and further evidence of the truth of these statements, that all these teacher from so many different time periods and backgrounds emphasize that to find true peace, you need to serve others and forget yourself. What an amazing concept. Simple, yet difficult at the same time. Human beings are so naturally focused inward that it is sometimes so difficult to do!

I myself am always striving to turn outward, but I am human and so of course I often fail. But I think that as long as we are journeying with all our might towards the ideal of selflessness, then that is enough.

    1. Hi Mariah

Really nice to hear from you and get your thoughts with regard to my post. Service to others as you mentioned allows us to take our concerns away through giving of ourselves, a higher purpose if you like. Your words tell me a lot about you and I can feel that you have already found a door to peace and happiness.

Any realization of the truth sets us on the journey, one that has no destination. Each day, step by step we move closer the the place we are seeking.

      Blessings Mariah and thanks again

  6. This is a great post, I love the spiritual things, even when some people call me crazy to believe in it. Luckily my wife supports me since she also believes in it.

These words are very motivating, whenever I feel down or don’t have courage.

This site will be among my favorite ones!

    1. Hi Emmanuel

I’ve got to say your comment made me smile. I’m so glad both you and your wife have an understanding of your spiritual side. While we are so busy accumulating things in the hope that they will bring us happiness, we tend to forget, or maybe not even be aware that the source of true lifetime happiness can only be found within.

Great to hear from you Emmanuel and I’ll hear from you again soon I’m sure.

Namaste ( I honour the place within you where we are both one )

  7. Hi, this is a cool article.  That would be a very cool group of people to hang out with. Buddha, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Muhammad and Jesus.

They are such great people with big hearts. They are wonderful and very smart. They are so dedicated to being spiritually centered that it is very inspirational. I would imagine that they experience reality completely different then people that are addicted to thinking.

My favorite quote from Mother Theresa is “they are all Jesus in disguise” – When she was asked about helping all those thousands of deceased people. (Meaning she seen god in everybody) She was a very beautiful person.

I was brought up Christian, but  I am currently just a non religious student of the universe,.  However, Jesus has a pretty awesome reputation. I read a lot about him, I also liked the bible but it was too complicated to read when I was younger.

    Thanks for this.

    1. Hi Jake, Welcome again. I really appreciate your comments. This post was never meant to have anything to do with religion. They are all greats regardless of their religious beliefs and basically share the same ideas and teachings on a very deep level. We can all be grateful for their timeless words of wisdom

  8. I enjoy the one that says , ” We are shaped by out thoughts, we become what we think and when the heart is pure joy flows like a shadow. I think those are some of the best words I have ever heard or could ever come across. I have always kept telling myself that whatever I can imagine I can create and that has kept me going. I’ve noticed over the years that i actually have become what I thought and what I think. Beautiful word here thank you.

    1. Hi Donny. Great stuff, we often don’t realise the changes that are happening with persistent change and growth. It is quite a subtle conversion, but it’s great to notice as you have my friend.Congratulation Donny

  9. Thank you for sharing this with me and every one else. How uplifting. it is not easy to say these affirmations if you are doing things that are more negative. But, if I focused on the words and believe, then I can begin to work on myself. I love quotes because they are “bite size” bits of a learning experience. Thank you again.

    1. Hi Melissa, These quotes and affirmations are great aren’t they. I always have to stop and ponder the truth of what’s being said in each one, sometimes for a few seconds, often though a few minutes..It’ a wise place to go and spend some time

  10. Wow, this is mind blowing mind blowing, I’ve been surfing through the internet for a while now and this is actually the first time I’m coming across an article so coordinated as this. Spiritual quotes and quotes of of good lifestyle are very useful to human existence as it helps to shape our lives into a better one. I’ll bookmark this website and I’ll also share it to some platforms so that other people will gain from it.

    1. Hey there, great to see you here again, and for those of us who have taken the time to fully comprehend what these great people have to say, it is truly mind blowing. No mention of wealth found here just abundance brought about by their attitude to life. The Truth. Thanks for sharing
